Although Paul's desire to personally return to see the Thessalonians was frustrated, he found out what he needed to know by sending Timothy. By this means, Paul was able to encourage them "remotely" that they continue in the faith despite the persecutions they faced. These afflictions were totally to be expected because our adversary the Devil does not want the gospel to advance, and when it does he wants to tear down that advance.
