Ecclesiastes is an autobiographical about how Solomon “came to himself” after God initially gave him great wisdom (1 Kings 3:12) but he later fell into terrible sin (1 Kings 11:1-8). Ecclesiastes reports how he pursued all kinds of luxuries—but his soul was empty. Toward the end of his life, he penned Ecclesiastes as his final chapter of wisdom. It extols the value of judiciously enjoying God’s gifts, but recognizes that God will bring all things into judgment. Therefore, we must fear God and keep His commandments. Because of this, we must “enjoy” the pleasures of life with proper restraint.
