This message is about wise use of the resources that God has given to us, particularly in retirement.

The quote, “He who dies with the most toys wins” has been attributed to Malcolm Forbes, a millionaire who lived a lavish and ungodly lifestyle. He had a net worth of hundreds of millions of dollars at his death in 1990. For this message, I have chosen to use him as a foil—a contrast to the kind of person the Lord Jesus wants us to be.

Said another way, Forbes is a modern example of the kind of person that Jesus rebukes in the parable, the fool whose soul was required of him in a day, and his vast wealth could not save him. “Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.” (Prov. 11:4 NIV)
