The Christian life is three-dimensional: love, truth, and obedience. Our love operates in the realm of Christian truth and is demonstrated by obedience to God’s commands. “To love one another” is one of those commands that we obey and thus show the genuineness of our faith. Note verse 4: “walk in truth”; verse 6a: “walk according to His commandments”; verse 6b: “walk in the commandment [love].”
